Because when you know what to look for, the great ones shine early.
In the fast-paced world of care recruitment, time is precious.
You might only have a 15-minute phone screen or a 10-minute walk-in conversation to decide whether a candidate is worth progressing. And with staff shortages piling up, the pressure to move quickly can lead to rushed (and regrettable) hires.
But here’s the truth:
You can absolutely spot a standout carer in 10 minutes or less — if you know what to look for.
At SisterStaff, we’ve interviewed thousands of carers, and we’ve learned how to identify the ones who don’t just do the job… they elevate it.
Here’s how you can do the same.
-
Listen for Empathy in the First 60 Seconds
Standout carers don’t wait to be asked if they care — it shows up immediately in their tone and language.
Notice:
- Do they smile when talking about their clients?
- Do they refer to service users with warmth and respect?
- Do they talk with emotion or pride about why they do what they do?
Even simple phrases like:
“I just love making people feel comfortable”
or
“It makes my day when a client laughs with me”
…are signs of someone who connects on a human level.
Empathy isn’t taught. It’s heard. And it usually shows up early.

Ask This Question Early: “What Do You Think Makes a Great Carer?”
This is your fast-track litmus test.
A standout carer will say things like:
- “Patience, definitely”
- “Treating people the way you’d want your own mum cared for”
- “Being reliable. It’s someone’s life, not just a job”
A weaker candidate might say:
- “I just need the hours”
- “I don’t really know, I just applied”
- “I’ve done it before, so I guess I’m good at it”
You’re listening for values-driven answers — not just buzzwords or rehearsed lines.
-
See How They Handle a Scenario Question
Skip the textbook answers. Give them a situation.
Example:
“If a client refused to take their medication and became upset, how would you handle it?”
A standout carer will say something like:
- “I’d stay calm, reassure them, and try to find out what’s bothering them. I’d follow their care plan but also let the manager know.”
They balance:
- Compassion
- Communication
- Procedure
You’re looking for someone who can stay grounded and thoughtful — even in the middle of a curveball.
-
Watch Their Body Language and Tone
In person or on video, non-verbal cues tell you a lot.
- Do they sit up, make eye contact, and smile?
- Are they actively listening and engaging — or just waiting for the next question?
- Do they speak clearly, calmly, and with purpose?
Even over the phone, tone matters:
- Do they sound warm?
- Are they confident without being arrogant?
- Do they pause to think rather than rush to answer?
Care is personal — and great carers are naturally attuned to people.
-
Ask What They’re Most Proud Of in Their Work
This question reveals their motivations and mindset.
Strong answers include:
- “Helping a client regain confidence after surgery”
- “Earning the trust of someone who didn’t like having carers at first”
- “Being promoted to senior carer because I worked hard and supported new staff”
Their story will show you whether they care deeply, go above and beyond, and recognise the human side of the work.
-
Note How They Talk About Previous Employers
This is a major clue.
If someone only has bad things to say:
- “They were awful”
- “Everyone there was useless”
- “I didn’t get on with anyone”
…it could signal a pattern of conflict, blame, or poor attitude.
A standout carer might share challenges, but with maturity and reflection:
“It was a tough environment, but I learned a lot”
“It helped me realise what kind of team I thrive in”
“There were some issues, but I always showed up and did my best”
Watch for grace under pressure — it’s a powerful sign of someone who will represent you well.
-
Test for Curiosity
Ask:
“Do you have any questions for me?”
Great carers ask things like:
- “How do you support your staff during difficult shifts?”
- “What are the training opportunities like?”
- “Do you do team meetings or catch-ups?”
This shows they’re thinking beyond the basics.
They’re engaged.
They want to grow.
They want to belong.
Final Thought: You Don’t Need an Hour to Spot a Gem
Some of the best carers we’ve ever placed were identified within the first few minutes of a conversation.
Not because they had the flashiest CV.
Not because they gave perfect answers.
But because they showed up with heart, humility, and hunger to help.
So next time you’re interviewing under pressure, remember:
You’re not just filling a shift — you’re investing in someone’s journey with you.
And with the right approach, you can tell who’s worth that investment — fast.
