Every founder hits it.
That frustrating, disorienting moment when things stop growing.
You’ve launched. You’ve hired. You’ve onboarded your first clients. Revenue came in, then steadied. You’re proud—but also stuck. What once felt like momentum now feels like maintenance.
Welcome to the growth plateau.
At Big Sister, we’ve seen this time and again. As founders build healthcare businesses—especially in the high-pressure world of care, they often assume that the early wins will naturally lead to consistent upward progress. But plateaus are normal. In fact, they’re a sign of success. You’ve done something right. Now it’s time to do something new.
Here’s how to get unstuck and grow again.
-
Recognise That You’ve Entered a New Phase
The first step is acceptance. Many founders try to fix a plateau with short-term hacks: a Facebook ad here, a policy tweak there, a few more hours squeezed in each week.
But a plateau isn’t a blip, it’s a signal. You’ve reached the limits of your current model, and you’re being invited to upgrade.
Ask yourself:
- Are you still operating with the systems of a startup?
- Are you spending more time in the business than on it?
- Are you missing strategic partnerships, operational scalability, or market positioning?
Founders who break through know that a new season of growth requires a new version of their leadership.
-
Audit Your Current Reality
At Founder’s Circle, we encourage all Big Sister businesses to regularly run a Growth Audit. Here’s a condensed version you can do today:
- Clients – Where are they coming from? Has that source slowed down?
- Team – Are your staff still aligned, or are you carrying too much yourself?
- Reputation – What do people really say about your service now?
- Operations – Are you delivering at a standard that scales?
- You – How are your energy levels? Excited? Tired? Drained?
Plateaus often occur when business growth has outpaced internal infrastructure. That’s a solvable problem—but only if you’re honest about where the friction lies.
-
Reclaim Your Position as CEO, Not Operator
Most care founders are deeply committed. You step in to cover shifts. You respond to family calls. You write the risk assessments. But if you’re still doing everything—your business can’t grow.
Breaking through a plateau usually means restructuring your role:
- Build in management layers
- Automate admin where possible
- Outsource specialist tasks (marketing, bid writing, payroll, etc.)
- Spend at least one full day per week in CEO mode
At Big Sister, we coach our founders to shift from doing the work to leading the business. That shift isn’t just necessary, it’s non-negotiable.
-
Double Down on Bids and Bigger Contracts
One of the fastest ways to break through is to start thinking bigger.
Care companies often plateau because they only focus on private clients or LA referrals. But there are millions in government contracts available to well-positioned providers, if you know how to write a winning bid.
In fact, many of our Founder’s Circle members have seen growth spikes of £500K+ after winning their first framework or NHS partnership.
Ask:
- Are you set up to win public sector work?
- Have you had your bid library reviewed lately?
- Do you know which portals list the best-fit opportunities for your services?
Big Sister’s Bid Writing Team, led by Ima Johnstone and Calum Egginton-Robson, supports our members through this very transition—positioning you to win, not just compete.
-
Get Closer to the Right People
Growth isn’t just about doing more. It’s about being known by the right people.
Who refers clients to you? Who champions your name when you’re not in the room?
To move past your plateau, you need to:
- Build relationships with decision-makers
- Partner with hospitals, community groups, and local authorities
- Show up online as the go-to expert in your area
Founder’s Circle provides a powerful network effect; we actively make introductions between our care business members and the contacts they need to grow. That ecosystem alone can unlock new levels of visibility and credibility.
-
Productise and Simplify
Over time, businesses become complex. You add services, bend rules for clients, and end up with a patchwork of offers.
To grow again, simplify.
Ask:
- What is our core offer?
- What do we do best—and most profitably?
- What can we stop doing or phase out?
Creating repeatable, scalable packages (like 24-hour care, hospital discharge support, or dementia-specific services) helps your team operate consistently and your marketing message hit harder.
-
Reconnect to Your Vision
Lastly, a plateau often means you’ve lost sight of why you started.
When you’re exhausted, overworked, or disillusioned—it’s easy to forget your original mission. And yet, your vision is your ultimate growth lever. It’s what inspires your team, attracts your clients, and fuels your resilience.
Ask yourself:
- What would wild success look like in 3 years?
- What kind of business am I trying to build, not just financially, but culturally?
- Who do I want to serve and how?
The clarity of your vision can determine the direction of your next breakthrough.
